Since 2018, we have celebrated World Bicycle Day on June 3, as established by the United Nations General Assembly. The bicycle is a truly brilliant mode of transportation, offering multifaceted benefits to individual users and society as a whole. Cycling improves health and physical fitness and has a positive impact on mental and physical well-being. Bicycles offer countless possibilities in sports, tourism, rehabilitation, medical treatment, and many other areas—they are simply for everyone, from elite athletes to those with limited mobility, from young children to the elderly; it’s just a matter of choosing the right model. Moreover, bicycle is a zero-emission vehicle that produces no exhaust fumes, allowing you to reach your destination faster than by car in congested cities, while also offering real financial and time savings. We encourage everyone to regularly enjoy the benefits of cycling!
Not everyone knows that the originator of World Bicycle Day is a graduate of our Poznan University of Physical Education from the 1970s, a former competitive cyclist named Cyclist of the Year in 1976 by the Polish Olympic Committee — Dr. Leszek Sibilski, who later earned a PhD in sociology from Jagiellonian University and lectured at American universities for many years. We are proud of our alumnus and his achievements. On this occasion, we wish him continued success in his tireless efforts to promote the benefits of cycling around the world.
Below is the solemn proclamation, which was signed by the rector of our University
